Unmatched — Now What?

Over the past few days, I’ve received messages and spoken with many residency applicants who had unfavorable outcomes from this year’s Match. Some had zero interviews, while others had multiple interviews during the Main Match and SOAP—yet still walked away unmatched.

If you’re reading this and feeling lost, disappointed, or unsure of your next steps—you are not alone. This might be one of the most challenging positions to be in, especially after investing years of hard work, tens of thousands of dollars, and countless hours into your medical journey.

💡 The Hard Truth

The Match doesn’t always reflect your worth, dedication, or potential. Sometimes, even when you’ve done everything “right,” things still don’t go your way.

It’s okay to pause. Let yourself feel—whether it’s sadness, frustration, confusion, or numbness. All those emotions are valid.

🪞 Reflect on Your Application

When you’re ready, take a step back and critically reflect on your journey and prior application:

  • Was your specialty choice highly competitive?

  • Were your board scores and year of graduation aligned with program averages?

  • Did your personal statement and CV effectively reflect your goals and interests?

  • Red flags?
  • Were your letters of recommendation strong and relevant?

  • Could your interview skills be improved?

📈 Strengthen Your Next Application

Every journey is unique—but many unmatched applicants match successfully the following year with a more strategic approach.

Consider the following improvements (as applicable):

  • Gain additional U.S. clinical experience.

  • Secure stronger, personalized letters of recommendation.

  • Engage in clinical research, academic projects, or volunteerism.

  • Retake or improve board scores (if relevant)

  • Update your CV and rewrite your personal statement.

  • Practice interview skills and communication techniques

🩺 Stay Involved in Medicine

While reapplying, stay connected to the clinical world by pursuing roles like:

  • Research assistant, scribe, teaching fellow, or clinical coordinator

  • Volunteering at free clinics or in underserved communities

  • Exploring opportunities in public health or Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI)

  • Enrolling in a post-bacc or master’s program (MPH, MS, etc.)

These roles not only provide experience and income, but also help you grow, expand your network, and build a stronger profile for next year’s Match.
